2,1774M factored |
2,1774M is factored. The composite cofactor was the product of 103-digit and 113-digit prime numbers. I've added a report of our daily progress to the server status page, and it's slowly creeping upward. Thank you for all of your contributions! |

Let's all sing "Das Deutschlandlied" |
Congratulations to SETI.Germany in the first BOINC Pentathlon. They had a very tight race with Electronic Sports League (ESL) here in Collatz but managed to pass ESL in the last few hours of the competition giving them the win in the Mathematics discipline. That win also led to SETI.Germany taking #1 overall in the first BOINC Pentathlon. I also have to say, "WOW!" Who thought ESL would do so well and lead the competition until the last couple days? Congratulations to ESL as well on finishing #2.
During the competition, more than 10 petaFLOPS of computing power was active in Collatz! Thanks to all who participated.

Project News May 18, 2010 |
We'd like to thank everyone for the recent dramatic increase in throughput. Our sustained teraflops has been at an all time high and it couldn't have come at a better time with CASP9 in progress and exciting research developments in the lab. |

Database server crashed. |
It's back up now and the tables claim to be repairs. We won't be distributing work until tomorrow.

Test application released |
I released a test application for Linux 64 bits.
I'm looking for how I can collect the amount of data downloaded and uploaded.
If you want to run test application, you should accept running test applications in your preferences. |

ERRONEOUS ERROR WITH LATEST BATCH - PLEASE KEEP CRUNCHING! |
Upon completion of a workunit from this latest batch of GARLI jobs, you may see a message like the following:
Output file 234594970.40009717460018646.5_0_4 for task 234594970.40009717460018646.5_0 absent
Your result may be temporarily marked as invalid, but never fear - there is code in place on the server that will execute periodically and fix these results and validate them normally. You WILL be granted credit eventually, so please keep crunching!
Thank you!

FAMOUS version 6.08 |
Version 6.08 is released Please continue running version 6.07 if you already have. No need to abort existing workunits |

DB problem and work restart |
There was a major DB problem experienced recently, so all the work had to be removed. It will be restarted anew in the nearest future. Apologies for the incovenience it may have caused. |

New HIV-1 protease simulations |
Following recent discovery of the wide-open conformation of HIV-1 protease ( which can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/wohiv), we have sent some WUs to further investigate conformations of this enzyme. After initial testing we anticipate a large increase in the number of these WUs.

Unexpected downtime |
Today there was a weird smell of tuna in the server room and shortly after 14:35 UTC the main server suddenly went down. Quick tests showed that the 12V pin voltage on the PSU had dropped out of acceptable range. Half an hour later the system was back online with a new power supply installed.
No data was lost during the incident and (since we aren't rendering anything right now) the impact on the service has been minimal.

Another batch, now with anti-aliasing. |
The previous run have reproduced the map of ground states in circular nano-cylinder in agreement with theory (which means that the energy is calculated correctly), but its precision was not enough to obtain the map of metastable states. This is because tracing of metastable states involves taking derivatives, which amplifies the errors. To reduce the jitter, associated with assignment of constant charges to finite elements, I have introduced a Monte-Carlo anti-aliasing procedure to calculate the average density of charges across each finite element. I hope this will be sufficient to reduce the jitter. We'll see. If not, there are other, more intensive methods. |

Project News May 13, 2010 |
From Friday, 14 May 2010 about 14:00 clock up to Monday, 17 May 2010, about 10:00 clock (German time), the server won't be accessible, because of work on the
electrical power supply in our building.
Thank you for understanding. |

Server software upgrade |
Server software has been upgraded to the latest version. It brings serveral improvements, mostly visible one probably is news forum where you can comment directly on news items.
However, as with every upgrade, there might be something that breaks, so in case you find anything not working or working not like it did previously, and you think that it's a bug, please report it in the comments for this newspost. Thanks!

Project closing |
It's official. I will be closing the project on Wednesday (May 12th). Since this is my last week here, I have to clear out the server. As before, you can check on the status of the project at my personal domain http://research.davecoss.com/brats/ . After I shutdown the server, that site will act as an archive for this project. I already starting moving stuff over, so anything posted in the message board from now on will not appear there. Again, if you do not want your username to remain in the archived message board or profiles, let me know either here or via email at |

Checkpointing and Progress Bar |
It has been made clear to me that for long-running GARLI jobs, it is possible for the program to stay in both its initial phase (1-5%) and final phase (95-100%) for an extended period of time. Moreover, these phases can amount to significantly more than 10% of total runtime. During these phases the progress bar will not move and the program will not checkpoint! It is a situation we will work on remedying, but will have to live with for the time being. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
